Gouie's Double Jump oddity#108

Gouie’s double jump locks his horizontal speed in place while still building momentum, making his aerial movement feel clunky.

Bringing it up because I don’t think it’s supposed to act like this(?) since it’s only during an empty Double Jump, First Jump and “attacking during a DJump” don’t have this issue.

This is intended. Gouie’s air speed and air acceleration would be too oppressive if he had full access to them at all times. Requiring Gouie to commit to an attack in order to access his maximum air speed and air acceleration still allows him to perform long combos but makes it harder for him to stall in the air and run away. It also adds more nuance to his aerial combos by forcing him to consider when to begin his attacks; starting a Fair early means he can move farther during it, which can matter when chasing an opponent, but in doing so he may only be able to hit the sourspot. Simply jumping towards the opponent without an aerial means he can time his aerial better to counter the opponent’s recovery options, but makes it harder for him to chase the opponent to get to that point in the edgeguard situation. There was a point in testing when he did not have this mechanic and he was nearly uncontestable in the air without it.

Interesting, I can understand the goal with it then.
I’d still like to report that it doesn’t feel correct in it’s current state as the halt to momentum is too harsh.

While the Forward and Turn-Around DJumps preserve airspeed, the Fadeback and Neutral DJumps feel as though a variable is pushing against it’s building acceleration/velocity, as opposed to the velocity being a gradual buildup. This is resulting in his airspeed going from a stationary object to full-speed without an inbetween.

While I don’t disagree with keeping his air mobility in check, I feel there’s a better way to achieve the same result without making it feel, weird.

I fully understand the balancing behind it, but I am inclined to agree it does feel incredibly weird and unintuitive.

I would argue this restriction shouldn’t be on Big Gouie though. He has significantly worse manuverability than little Gouie, ontop of being a MUCH larger body.
